French Irises and Their Hybridizers

Our gardens abound in irises coming from the USA and Australia and soon they will be filled with varieties from Eastern Europe and even from Russia and Ukraine. I don't know if the world's gardeners know of the outstanding French varieties, but there is no shortage of them. And the quality of these French irises is not lacking as is demonstrated by the good results of the French hybridizers in European competitions in Florence, Munich, and Paris.

I have put together a list of varieties from French hybridizers. Although this is just a beginning and there are many more fine irises, this text contains varieties of many different colors and patterns. To keep the lists simple, I have chosen only twenty irises, mainly recent introductions, which cover the whole spectrum of colors you can find in France.

Let's start with the white. I propose a variety that seduced the judges of the competition FRANCIRIS© of 2005, as much for its perfect whiteness as for its remarkably drawn flowers. It is 'Gwennaden' (Madoré, 2001) (1). It is not an absolutely newest variety, but it always seems to me worthy to be included in this anthology.


In yellow I chose 'Macao' (Laporte, 2009) (2). Coming from the crossing 'Magic Kingdom' X 'Lorenzaccio De Medicis', it is a deep yellow with brown-scarred sepals, which gives it "peps". Bernard Laporte has obtained other interesting yellow irises, such as 'Féria de Nîmes' (2006) for example.


From yellow, let's go to brown. For this color, I hesitate between two very beautiful irises: the famous 'Lumière d'Automne' (L. Anfosso (3) for Eric Besse (2009) and 'Tabac Blond' (R. Cayeux, 2006) (4). The first had a complicated history because it was not registered when it was placed on the market and it was only after a very strong demand from collectors that the plant received registration. The second is nevertheless a fine example of the talent of Richard Cayeux.


Can we switch to orange? In this ungrateful color (in the irises, I specify) breeders from Britanny stand out clearly. Gérard Madoré first then Alain Chapelle (5) gave us very beautiful specimens, that's why I choose 'Baisers Dorés' (Chapelle, 2016), a flamboyant full-fledged orange, from 'Game Plan' X 'Leading Light'. It is a success.


'Terre de Feu' (Cayeux, 1997) is already 20 years old. It does not detract from its russet, red copper centered blue metallic; a color that we do not often find in the garden.

In the reds it is necessary to start with the magenta tone and in this case I succumb to my affection for 'Mamy Framboise' (V. Fur / B. Laporte, 2004). Not only it is an iris with bright colors, but it is also a plant without problem, which grows quickly and well.


In a more sustained tone, it is necessary to decide between the "old" 'Rive Gauche Paris' and its younger 'Bouschet' (Laporte 2006). 'Rive Gauche' (obtained by Vivette Sazio in 1993) was registered under the name 'Rive Gauche Paris' by Laure Anfosso in 2012. It is a little slow to develop, but what color! It is in the pedigree of' Bouschet ', who inherited his rich clothes, but enjoys a faster growth.


In the numerous purple family, I designate 'Confiserie' (R. Cayeux, 2016). A little short on stalk, but richly colored, with a slightly rosy hue, very pleasant. His sibling 'Attirance' (2016), is not bad either, and looks like a twin!

Mauve is a delicious color, always associated with iris. One of his champions was Larry Gaulter. One of the most successful people here is Lawrence Ransom (6). His 'Marie Kalfayan' (1994), with an orange beard that gives her verve, deserves to be included in this list.


The same contrast between the beard and the rest of the flower is found in the light blue 'Princess Caroline of Monaco' (R. Cayeux, 1997). It is a plant which, for me, has all the qualities. I am not alone in thinking like that because it seems that it has received a great welcome all over the world.


I propose another iris by Richard Cayeux to illustrate the bright blue color. 'Grand Admiral' (1999). This large and beautiful flower has proven itself and seems to succeed everywhere. Descending from two of the most popular blues, 'Memphis Blue' and 'Sapphire Hills', this is a fine example of the wise use of inbreeding.

During the 18th century the amateurs hybridizers competed with one another about the black tulip. Today the black iris is almost the same challenge: nature does not know how to make black flowers naturally. Never mind, the most successful hybridizers have taken the case to the body and obtained flowers that now almost reach perfection. Among the recent French acquisitions, I have spotted two that have their place in this article. 'Penhir' (G. Madoré, unfortunately not registered) and 'Jais Moqueur' (A. Chapelle, 2016). But Bernard Laporte also had the happy hand with 'Dakar' (2009), enriched with spurs. Finally, in this difficult color, here we are with more pretenders than there is room!


Let's finish with the selfs talking about pink irises. There is plethora! After much hesitation, I selected 'Sensuelle' (Ransom, 1999) and 'Succès Fou' (Cayeux, 2000). The first shows a hint of orange, but this is not unpleasant and, like all the Lawrence Ransom varieties, it has an incomparable class. The second, contemporary of the previous, oscillates between the pink "flamingo" and the pink "coral". A delicious flower.


We are now talking about two-colored varieties. Starting with the many blue amoenas. I cannot decide between several particularly beautiful flowers: 'Barbe Noire' (R. Cayeux, 2012), 'Domino Noir' (R. Cayeux, 2012), and 'Princesse Laura' (Cancade, 2014) (7). Not only the flowers, with a sharp contrast, perfectly meet the criteria defining the amoenas, but also the plants themselves, make them indispensable to the iris garden.


In the amoenas, there are not only the blues, but we must not forget the roses or the yellows. However, if for the blues, make a choice was not difficult, the other colors have made my life more difficult. Not too much for the pink amoenas, category for which I designated 'Chateau d'Auvers sur Oise' (R. Cayeux, 2003) for its fresh colors where the pure white neighbors with a tone of pink apricot very sweet, with beautiful ripples. But yes for the yellows in whom I did not find anything exciting. 'Infusion Tilleul' (R. Cayeux, 2013) is not exactly on target, 'Cadran Lunaire' (J.C. Jacob, 2012) (8) will rather be ranked among the distallatas. I fell back on neighboring varieties, but very pretty: 'Ma Veronique' (R. Cayeux, 2013), where the yellow dominates, or 'Mireille Sanne' (Boulon, 2016) (9) where it is the white who takes over leaving yellow only the top of the sepals.


And reverse amoenas? This is not a subject that has inspired French hybrid breeders in recent years. I have selected two very successful varieties, which are in my own collection and whose vegetative qualities and harmony of colors I have been able to appreciate. They are 'Lune Bleue' (M. Bersillon, 1999) (10) in lavender blue on bluish white, and 'Somni' (R. Dejoux, 2008) (11), a subtle balance between petals of a very sweet primrose yellow and sepals very white.


On the side of variegated iris, we do not miss anything! I choose a very recent variety of a young hybridizer who must go far: Stéphane Boivin (12). He has made a name for himself at the last two FRANCIRIS© competitions and each of his flowers is attracting attention. This time I put forward 'Aime Bay' (2015). Coming from two "must", "Montmartre" and "Décadence", it is a modern variegata, in shades of beige and purple.

We return to a Richard Cayeux varieties for the category of two-color. 'Nelly Tardivier', (2012) has everything to please, especially a combination of original colors in fashion today. It's a variety that you must not miss!


The plicatas are part of my favorite irises. There is not only a purple plicata on a white background which we can say that they are introduced too often but an infinite number of variations. I prefer to put here a flower issued from the production of the late Lawrence Ransom, chic and rare: 'Ma Dulcinée' (2015). Impeccably coiffed, stitched, and veined with old lilac rose (as the official description says), it is a jewel for the garden. In a model often met in recent times in America, 'Fleur de Feu' (R. Cayeux, 2012) is not bad either.



Can we ignore the "broken color"? I do not think so, that's why I selected an original variety that grows well: 'Rose-Linda Vasquez' (2007) (13), created in the tiny garden of the hybridizer of the same name. This iris, which pleasantly mixes two shades of blue, is also an iris with spurs; he thus combines two very popular categories.


Appeared in the early 2000s, the new category called "distallata" quickly spread in our small world. Everyone wants to have its own. I thought to put to this catalog the obtaining of the young Sébastien Cancade 'Martingale' (2014) that the Anfosso family described in its catalog as "Warm white on purple veined and golden sepals around the orange beard, wavy and delicately perfumed. I add another version, more "soft", signed by Jean-Claude Jacob, 'Cadran Lunaire' (2012), but I do not yet know its horticultural qualities.


Let's end this inventory with the inevitable irises blue-white-red of the Cayeux's. In the long list of varieties of this kind, I propose 'Ruban Bleu' (J. Cayeux, 1997), last variety registered by Jean Cayeux, and admirable cultivar in all points.

Thus ends this collection of French irises, very representative of what our national hybridizers can offer. With these irises, you can be sure to build an exceptional iris garden. But do not forget that this is just a sampling, necessarily biased. There are many other remarkable varieties obtained in France during the last twenty years! And new hybridizers appear every year, among who we discover real talents.

(1)          Gérard Madoré was a French customs officer, who hybridized irises for a long time but who ceased this work now. Another hybridizer, Jean Claude Jacob, took back the plants and put them on the market.
(2)          Bernard Laporte, during another life, was a postman. Now he is one of the best French hybridizers and he markets his own varieties.
(3)          The Anfosso family is well known all the world round. During the 80's they hybridized excellent varieties; after a long interruption, they began again working with irises.
(4)          Who does not know the Cayeux family? Since the beginning of the twentieth century they hold a prominent place in the world of irises. Their last representative, Richard, is one of the best breeders in the world and his varieties are known everywhere and by all.
(5)          Alain Chapelle has only been interested in irises for about twenty years. His irises, often brightly colored, are very representative of the renewal of hybridization in France.
(6)          Lawrence Ransom died suddenly in 2016, of British origin but settled in France for about fifty years, is an original irisarian, eclectic, and creative. His irises are currently on sale by Roland Dejoux, President of French Iris Society.
(7)          Sébastien Cancade is a talented young hybridizer whose varieties are marketed by the company "Iris en Provence" of the Anfosso family.
(8)          Jean Claude Jacob also worked at La Poste before specializing in the hybridization of roses and irises of all categories. He markets his varieties himself.
(9)          Passionate about horticulture and particularly by irises, Jérôme Boulon makes crossings for his pleasure and that of his friends.
(10)        Michèle Bersillon was born in the USA. In France, she hybrids irises of a great delicacy of which some are on sale at Cayeux, but also at Stout's, in America.
(11)        Roland Dejoux is the current President of the French Society of Irises (SFIB). He markets his own irises.
(12)        Stéphane Boivin, an accountant, is passionate about iris and practices hybridization with great success. It is a great hope in this activity.
(13)        In her very little garden, Rose-Linda Vasquez manages to obtain interesting irises which she sells herself to a small number of connoisseurs.

Bacterial Rot in Irises


Icky-smelly-deadly!

Texas has had 12+ inches of rain and counting……..the weather is cooler and the days are shorter.  What is that icky smell in the garden?? 

The rain, while refreshing our lakes and absolutely necessary for all living creatures – can be a not-so-good thing for our bearded irises.  The tall bearded irises seem to be more impacted than the smaller irises such as Standard Dwarf (SDB), Intermediate (IB), and border bearded (BB) – however, not exempt from rot.



Bacterial rot can happen no matter the temperature.  Bearded irises do not like a prolonged period of time with their roots and/or rhizomes soaked with water.  Rot can happen quickly and can be deadly for irises. 

Be observant!  While our neighbors might think we are “a bit” strange slowly and carefully looking at nothing but green irises leaves and not a bloom in sight – the earlier we can attack rot, the better our chances are of saving the rhizome.  The outer leaves may turn yellow or the entire fan may be laying on the ground – these are definite signs of rot.  The smell of rot is very unpleasant – okay, it is downright icky!  Push on the top of the rhizome.  If rot is present, the rhizome will be mushy.  Sometimes maggots or small worms are already present. 


If you find rot, you can dig the infected rhizome.  Digging this late in the season might be problematic to dig the rhizome and get it re-established before winter.  Irises need about 6 weeks to establish new roots.  Whether you dig the rhizome or not, you must clean out all the infected tissue.  You can use a sharp knife to scoop out the rot. THROW THE ROTTED tissue away!  Do not leave it in your flowerbed.  DO NOT reuse the knife until you have thoroughly cleaned it with soap and water.  Once the rot has been removed, you can apply several types of products that may work to stop the rot. 

For the last few years, we used DIAL (not the store branch) antibacterial soap.  The irises have either built up a tolerance to the soap and/or the manufacturer has changed the formula, because last year I had limited success stopping the rot with the soap.  Another product you may try is BARTENDERS FRIEND, ZUD, or COMET applied directly to the area you removed the tissue from.  When the DIAL soap was not working for me I researched for an older product than many of us used in the 1980s.  We used AGRISTREP.  You cannot find the product any longer.  I researched the active ingredients of AGRISTREP and found that Fertilome Fire Blight Spray has common ingredients.  Finding the product on store shelves is difficult and only a handful of stores carry it.  I found it online through Amazon – buying one 2 oz container at a time.  NOTE:  There may be generic products on the market.


To purchase through Amazon is about $12-$14 per 2 oz.  You apply the product directly on the infected area.  NO NOT dilute in water.  You may have to apply multiple times (2 x per day) for a few days.  I know the product is expensive; however, so was the $60 for my “favorite” new iris purchase.  I found the Fertilome product at BWI through our nursery license.  Wholesale, the product is appx. $10. 

Happy gardening.  Don’t give up on the irises.  They just need our help getting through the monsoon season to bloom for us in the spring.

Wadi Zem Zem

Don't you hate it when you write something on the computer and the "cursed machine” thinks that it knows better, and constantly, automatically, corrects you, no matter how many times you click "ignore it?" Well, this is what happens with the name of the famous Spuria iris named ‘Wadi Zem Zem’. My computer hates the words Zem Zem. Finally, it made me discover what Mr. Milliken had in mind when he named his Spuria this way. What I discovered surprised me and I am glad that I learned something new. I started my research from the word "Wadi." It doesn't look like an English word, because it is not, it’s actually Arabic. Wadi is the Arabic term traditionally referring to a valley or ravine, bounded by relatively steep banks, found primarily in North Africa and the Middle East. In some instances, it may refer to a dry (ephemeral) riverbed that contains water only during times of heavy rain. Wadis are located on gently sloping nearly flat parts of deserts. Permanent channels do not exist due to lack of continual water flow. Wadis also show braided stream patterns because of the deficiency of water and the abundance of sediments. Wadis are generally dry year round, except after rain.


The desert environment is characterized by sudden but infrequent heavy rainfall, often resulting in flash floods. Crossing wadis at certain times of the year can be dangerous as a result. Uadi Zemzem (Wadi Zem Zem) is a wadi in Libya (Africa). It is located at an elevation of 26 meters above sea level. Its coordinates are 31°24'0" N and 15°16'60" E. So it is interesting how Mr. Milliken, living in Arcadia, California, knew about this distant and remote place on Earth in an era without computers, TV and the time where radio, books and National Geographic magazine were the window to the unknown world. It was also during WW II and I am sure that he didn't have a lot of knowledge about the military actions of British Army in Northern Africa. But, he heard something about the battles in the area and named the new Spuria introduction after one of the locations of these battles. We would have never known about this place without Mr. Milliken, as we are not expected to know the details of British Army operations, and it would have been forgotten, if not for one British soldier named Keith Douglas, born in 1920. Douglas wrote the small book titled "Alamein to Zem Zem," which is a military memoir of the Western Desert campaign of World War II.


Written by Douglas shortly before his death in action in Normandy on June 9, 1944; it was first published in 1946. I think Mr. Milliken heard about the battle in Wadi Zem Zem and the young British poet-soldier who sought about the sacrifices of soldiers from all nations, naming his new spuria in order to pay tribute to those who fought evil. Douglas names, El Alamein, a small town in Egypt on the Mediterranean Sea, (66 miles from Alexandria and 149 miles from Cairo); Zem Zem is in Libya, and there the story ends. The book is mainly a personal account of Douglas' experiences as a young tank commander with the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry of the British Eighth Army at the Second Battle of El Alamein in October-November 1942. Zem Zem is the name of a wadi in Libya where Douglas was wounded in early 1943. This classic war book was written by one of the finest poets of WWII. Keith Douglas was posted to Palestine in 1941 with a cavalry regiment. When fighting broke out at El Alamein in 1942, he was instructed to stay behind as a staff officer.

But he wanted to fight, and so, completely disobeying orders, he drove a truck to the location of the battle and participated as a tank commander. Alamein to Zem Zem is a vivid and unforgettable description of his experiences on the desert battlefield, seen through the eyes of a poet-soldier.

"Highly charged, violent descriptive prose ... conveys the humor, the pathos and the literal beauty of the dead world of tanks, sand, scrub and human corpses. Scenes of unforgettable pity and terror unfold. Everything from flowers carpeting the desert in winter to vanquished enemies, is seen with the poet's eye and the generosity of youth." I need to admit that as much as I hate wars; I was mesmerized reading the Douglas memoirs, his deep humanity and pity for his fallen comrades, but also for his enemies. Alamein to Zem Zem tells of the eerie alien world of desert warfare where the men lived among sandstorms, flies, mosquitoes (not forgetting fever brought out by diminutive sand flies), desert sores, blind valleys, endless wastes of sand, roasting days, frozen nights, mirages and tricks of the light, machine-gun bullets visible against the clear starlight, booby-trapped corpses and derelict vehicles. It's a touching moment when Douglas rejoins his brigade after convalescence and learns who has survived and who didn't. This is a great read and lived up to its billing as a classic war memoir.

But I am supposed to write about Mr. Carl Milliken from Arcadia, California, who introduced 4 Spuria irises: 'Mt. Whitney', 'Mt. Wilson', 'Wadi Zem Zem' and 'White Heron' and particularly about Spuria 'Wadi Zem Zem', no matter what my computer "thinks" about the name. In the Iris Encyclopedia we can find very little information about ‘Wadi Zem Zem’. Is there someone who still
grows this Spuria?

But here is the description from Milliken Iris Garden catalog, 1945: 'Wadi Zem Zem' (Milliken). "A clear cream colored spuria, remarkably large in size and of excellent shape. The rounded spreading falls are two inches more in width, the standards are erect and open. Height 4 feet. Stock is very limited. $7.50."

As you probably noticed, the parentage of 'Wadi Zem Zem' is unknown. Backed by a strong family resemblance, 'Wadi Zem Zem' appears to be a direct descendant of I. monnieri, which was discovered growing in a garden in France. No wild habitat has been found, and although it was given a species designation at the time of its discovery, it is no longer considered a valid species. There are certain morphological similarities between I. monnieri and ‘Turkey Yellow,’ particularly the short recurved style crests unlike those of either I. orientalis or I. crocea but strongly resembling those of I. monnieri, would indicate that I. monnieri is indeed a hybrid between ‘Turkey Yellow’ and I. orientalis, both wild growing in similar areas of Turkey.

'Wadi Zem Zem' won the first ever Nies Award in 1956. It revolutionized the breeding of the spuria irises in two areas. First, it bequeathed to its offspring superior flower form - all of the better yellows in commerce can be traced back to Wadi, one or more times: Combs's 'Golden Lady', Walker's 'Oroville', Ferguson's 'Good Thunder', and Hager's 'Archie Owen'. Also, the influence of Wadi is a force in the genetic background of varieties in all of the wide range of colors of the modem spuria irises. The entrance of orange-yellow coloring onto the scene was the immediate result of crossing ‘Turkey Yellow’ with 'Wadi Zem Zem'.

Second, and possibly more importantly, 'Wadi Zem Zem' carries a resistance to the troublesome virus infections in spuria irises, which then it passed on to many of its progeny. All spuria varieties that show resistance to virus damage can be traced directly back to 'Wadi Zem Zem', an important phenomenon for an iris series in which virus infection is the primary malady.

Now there are 31 cultivars with 'Wadi Zem Zem' as one parent in its pedigree. I call them “child” of 'Wadi Zem Zem'. Some of them were used in multiple crosses during the following years and some were not used at all. In my original article for Spuria News I show the usage of "children" of 'Wadi Zem Zem' in crosses, and in providing the next generations of 'Wadi Zem Zem' "relatives." This illustrates how this one iris is in the pedigree of many modern Spuria varieties during about 70 years of iris Spuria hybridizing, and how they are all related to 'Wadi Zem Zem,' 'Turkey Yellow' and I. orientalis.

The "children" of 'Wadi Zem Zem' with the most influence in modern spuria varieties are: 'Anacapa', 'Golden Lady', 'Good Nature', Investment', 'Morningtide' and 'Wakerobin'. Grandchildren with the biggest involvements in modern varieties are: 'Burnished Brass', 'Intensity', 'Antiqua', 'Archie Owen', 'Connoisseur, 'Far Out', 'Lydia Jane', 'Plenty Of Sunshine', 'Yellow Wings', 'Baritone', 'Fairfield', 'Windfall’, 'Elan Vital', 'Contradiction' and 'Moon Bay Day'.

Because there were not so many Spuria varieties introduced in the last 50 years, children, grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and so on were crossed back and forth, passing the good traits of mostly I. orientalis into the next generations.

The Walker Ferguson breeding program from 'Monspur Premier' (Monnieri x Spuria) brought the strongly veined pattern, lending to 'Minneopa', McCown's 'Highline Sunset’ and Hager's 'Sarong’. Also from this line appeared Ferguson's deep blues and violets, 'Fort Ridge' and 'Proverb'. Most of the color lines in spuria irises can be traced back to single origins, as yellow color are traced to I. monnieri.

The browns and lavender blues are exclusive developments from the original Nies cross of I. orientalis x 'Monspur'. A progression to better form can be found in the work of Ferguson and Hager from the original 'Elixir' through 'Intensity' to Hager's 'Eagle' and Ferguson's 'Forty Carats'.

Hybridizing of white Spurias, which started with the white species I. ochroleuca, was lost along the way and is now re-appearing from more complicated lines. ‘Wakerobin’, the only notable white from Ferguson, is from 'Color Guard', a Nies blue, by yellow 'Wadi Zem Zem'. The problem with the whites is that breeders have been trying to eliminate the yellow spot and by so doing achieve what they consider a more attractive white flower. New whites with disappearing signals are also showing up in lines combining 'Wadi Zem Zem' with lavender-blue flowers, and in seedlings with I. carthaliniae in the background.

Breeders are also working for more ruffling, which has obviously been slow of development in spuria irises. Walker's 'Lydia Jane' and Hager's 'Ila Crawford' are impressive whites with this feature. But I think that the point of this article is to show how most of our Spurias in our gardens are so closely related and how most have some traits of Iris monnieri, Iris orientalis and 'Wadi Zem Zem' as distant relatives. Thank you, Mr. Milliken for the gift of 'Wadi Zem Zem' and for connecting the world's past tragic history, geography, the story of a young, talented war hero with the peaceful appreciation of garden Spuria irises in our everyday, ordinary, lives.

Photo Essay: The Beauty of Siberian Irises

A small sampling of Siberian iris photos I've taken in years past showcasing the beauty they bring to the garden.  Siberian irises make exceptional garden plants and are easy to grow and care for. They are especially beautiful when grown in large masses. For many decades the color range was limited, but recent advances have opened up entirely new color classes for them and amazing new varieties appear every year in reds, golds, pinks, oranges, browns, and blends. New forms and patterns are being explored by hybridizers as well, including multiple falls, heavy ruffling, and edge bands that give a plicata effect. Exciting times for fans of this iris species.

Magic Pods: When to gather Pacifica Iris seeds

When I first started growing Pacifica Iris from seed, I collected several pods too early. The seeds were not fully developed, and resulting germination rates were low. There were also the usual vole, jay and squirrel problems—these animals being all too willing to eat germinating seeds.

Come forward a few years; this year I was late gathering seeds, due to trips, work, and other commitments. What seeds I did collect were heavily colonized by fungi, despite a dry long summer along the Pacific Northwest coast. About half the seeds were composted due to fungal coatings. In many pods the seeds were completely felted together with fungal filaments. 

All of this left me with a complex about the right time to gather ripe Iris seeds. I asked for advice among a number of SPCNI members, thinking I must not be the only person who has struggled with ripening, predation, and fungi, and several people responded with comments and photos, including Debby Cole and Bob Sussman. I thank both of them for their helpful notes, and Bob for taking time to send photos.

Timing of seed ripening is based on tracking pod appearance. Pods go from skinny green to plump yellow and then brown. Six to seven weeks is the usual incubation period after flowering. Species often ripen quickly, including Iris tenax, I. innominata and I. thompsonii, which all may have yellowing and opening pods in five to six weeks in warm climates. 

A slight opening of the pod tips may appear when seeds are ripe. This varies from ‘never opens the slightest’ to ‘splits wide open and tosses seeds out’. The latter usually happens when I’ve been inundated with visitors, trips or work and do not have time to gather pods. Organza bags can help contain the seeds, but don’t leave them for weeks, or the bags will be chewed through and the seeds removed.

The corollary to ‘never opens in the slightest’ is that those pods may need to be cut open to free the seeds inside. Some Iris douglasiana pods have this character. They go from green to yellow, often with a ‘shrink-wrapped over the seeds’ look, and then to plump brown, by which time the pods are woody, hard, and require tools to open without shedding blood. The worst of this lot are also the last to flower and thus to ripen seeds each summer. 

When ripe seeds are left too long, they will be discovered by voles, crows, jays, and various molluscan and insect seed-eaters. The only solution is to get to those pods ahead of the seed-eaters. 

Fungi appear to grow in the pod tissue and seed coats, and not in the seeds. I’ve had healthy seedlings grow from seeds heavily covered in fungi. But we can't seen around seeds that have visible mold. Biosecurity is getting tighter all the time. If we gather seeds at the right time, and reduce/eliminate fungi thereby, this helps reduce the chances that seeds will be rejected by inspectors.

As for color, that is a feature of the moisture content of the seed. Fresh, viable seeds are very light brown, and dry seeds are dark brown.

New Iris Species ‘Azure Blue’

In the spring on my trip to Oregon and Washington for the joint Region 13/TBIS meeting, I had planned to spend the day after the meeting in Oregon at Mt. Pleasant Iris Farm, then at Aitken’s Salmon Creek, and then the evening with my niece and her family.

Sunday morning, I got on the road only to find the rental had a leaking tire; Thrifty did a quick exchange of vehicles at the Portland Airport and I arrived mid-morning at Mt. Pleasant. Seeing that Chad and Dale were both busy, I headed for the irises. Almost at once, Chad Harris came up and wanted me to go up the hill to the patio and to see a new iris species he had in bloom, especially since one flower was fading rapidly.


At this time the new species does not have a botanical name and goes by the garden name of ‘Azure Blue’. Chad had two specimens blooming in pots and there was enough difference between the two clones to see that they had been raised from seed. One of the most interesting things about this new species is the notches in the standards that locks the standards in place. Right now the goal is to obtain more seed so more growers can propagate the plant. Later down the line, the hope is studies will be done to see where it fits into the genus iris. The current thinking is that it is an unknown species of crested iris most likely related to I. milesii and I. tectorum; however, it has resisted setting seed with either one of these groups. The stalks had two flowers in the terminal and one flower in the side branch.





This new species was one of the highlights of my Oregon and Washington trip. It is not every day that we get to see a new species live and bloom.

The background of this iris is also interesting. It comes from the least populated states in India, Arunachal Pradesh, and borders Tibet, Myanmar, and Bhutan. The climates range from subtropical to alpine and even tundra.

Travel to the state is not easy, but in 2009 the plantsman Peter Boardman went on journey through the state. There he took pictures of an unknown iris. In 2014 a collecting trip was made, plant material collected, and then that material sat in the post office and customs and was destroyed. Until I made the trip this spring to Oregon, I was not aware that seeds had made it to the United States. We should consider this a developing botanical story with the next chapter yet to unfold.
