All irises have pods with three valves that open and spread when seeds are mature and pods are dry. Open pods toss seeds a few feet, shaking seeds out in the wind and opening a bit more from day to day. Iris pods often open at inconvenient times, usually on hot sunny days when I'm away from home. This was a frustrating reality for me when I started crossing plants and saving seeds, because I'm often hiking in mid summer, away in the hills when those pods pop open.
I. douglasiana has green pods with three valves. Bag and save upright pods, not the sprawling stems. You will find the mature pods more easily later if they are upright.

Iris douglasiana has the longest ripening period. Pods may take nine weeks to fully mature.

Mesh bag on green pod––unobtrusive, discrete, and could be easily overlooked in a few weeks when the seeds are ripe.

I use these mesh bags on my ripening figs to keep the mockingbirds from devouring them. Good idea to use them for collecting seed pods. I'd get a bright colored bag so they are easy to find.

There is a nice video on u tube that shows how to hybridize tall bearded iris. It is by Mark from Pleasant Valley Iris Farm. It is a clear, concise video. He uses Knee High Nylon Socks instead of baggies. Would that be cheaper? He also has a nice way of tagging his crosses. This might be the link but I'm not sure. Hybridize 1.MP4 by kendalrichard.
ReplyDeleteTBs have much larger pods, so this is probably a great solution for Mark. I'll have to price nylon socks and see how they compare to organza mesh bags. One advantage is that the mesh bags come with ties, so I can snug them up to the stems, and not lose any seeds if the pods open before I gather them.
ReplyDeleteThanks for passing on this idea.
I've used bags for 10 years. I made my own out of the cheapest lace fabric I could find. Quite putting drawstring on them after the first year. Holds water and just doesn't seem necessary here. White has the best contrast.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing such practical advice. I've been looking for ways to implement these strategies, and your tips are exactly what I needed.
