Feed the soil and the returns are bountiful for your plants and the environment. (She was 100 years old when she died in 2007).
Their big family lived off the beautiful mountain land of eastern Virginia. She always had a garden and used organic - manure, coffee, tea leaves, egg shells, etc. We lived in TN and Iris was Moms favorite plant and the TN state flower. She swapped and bartered until she had the most beautiful ever. I’m 82 snd fortunate to still have some of hers which I’ve shared with other family. I’m trying to take care of these beauties andI hope I can leave these for others to enjoy as she did. Thanks for reminding me of the best way to grow And preserve Irises (and other plants and trees). I just add organic material to the soil, recycling kitchen waste and grass and other plant clippings. I have thin soil over chalk, but an abundance of Iris, roses - old fashioned varieties mostly, peonies, hydrangeas - arborescens and paniculatas, that need less water, as well as a wide variety of grasses and other herbaceous perennials. I am pretty lazy about things, and everything just keeps on blooming!
Jenniferhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07081894715118572833noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7696495401112275586.post-2644634543321239552019-01-07T07:09:01.815-08:002019-01-07T07:09:01.815-08:00Tom,

I am new to growing iris beds, but not new to gardening. I strive to be as organic as possible in all phases of my gardening, but I am sure there are methods which I can add to make my iris beds better.

Evelyn Evelynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13023091939890748548noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7696495401112275586.post-13346662585073173792019-01-01T13:29:11.364-08:002019-01-01T13:29:11.364-08:00Great post, Tom! For the advantages I describe in this post, you need organic matter in some form.Tom Watershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13701923855333944372noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7696495401112275586.post-70356497003689425582018-07-26T06:15:26.673-07:002018-07-26T06:15:26.673-07:00Thanks!

This post is food for thought. Do you recommend an organic slow release fertilizer like Osmocote? I've started using something similar, which makes me feel a bit better about myself, but I don't know if it's actually an improvement.Tien Tranhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07573617570721998931noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7696495401112275586.post-44235748901129998432018-07-23T08:39:10.395-07:002018-07-23T08:39:10.395-07:00Outstanding advice with clear and sensible explana...Outstanding advice with clear and sensible explanation.
